Sibusiso Bheka (b. 1997, Katlehong, Johannesburg, South Africa). He was introduced to photography in 2012 through the Of Soul and Joy Project in Buhlebuzile Secondary School in Thokoza. His work documents life in Thokoza where he lives and works, offering a visual testimony to South Africa's complex history. His photograph captures both the scars of the country's violent past, and the beauty found in the nuances of everyday township life.
Currently serving as Project Assistant for Of Soul and Joy, Sibusiso graduated in photography from the Vaal University of Technology in 2018. His acclaimed series Stop Nonsense was featured in the 11th edition of the Rencontres de Bamako - African Biennale of Photography in 2017 as part of a traveling exhibition. The series was also showcased at the National Museum of World Culture in Leiden, Netherlands, in 2018.
Sibusiso has been recognized through several prestigious shortlists, including the Magnum Foundation Photography and Social Justice Fellowship (2018) and the Belfast Photo Festival. His work has been exhibited in various prominent spaces such as the Ithuba Arts Gallery (Johannesburg, 2013), Addis Foto Fest (Ethiopia, 2014), Ghent International Photo Festival (Belgium, 2015), Johannesburg Art Gallery (2016), Arles Photo Encounters (2020), and Bristol Photo Festival (2021).
